Environmental Conservation
With funding and encouragement from Agropalma, the Program developed a research project to evaluate the impacts of the expansion of palm plantations in the Eastern Amazon on aquatic and bird biodiversity. With this, PPGZOOL intends to generate recommendations for the ecological-economic planning of land use and to present management strategies that may allow more effective investments both for environmental conservation and for the economic development of the Region. Mixed methods are being used in the natural sciences (qualitative and quantitative) to collect data, and particularly to assess how policies for the expansion of oil palm cultivation affect protected areas and biodiversity, both now and in the future. The study began in 2014 and is focused on the State of Pará.
